This expanded warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "an international surge in the incidence of reported cases" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Just recently, authorities had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, after multiple notable cases such as the tragic demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or death within 12–48 hrs.

Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous substance commonly utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not meant for ingestion.

While it is generated during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the purification method.

But in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to reduce expenses, and because it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to detect.
