Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has declared he is withdrawing from the Irish presidential election immediately.

He was scheduled to be one of three candidates competing for the role of Irish president, alongside Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

Yet, on Sunday evening he said via a statement that he "erred inconsistent with his values and the standards I set myself."

"Considering all these factors, I've chosen to withdraw from the presidential election contest with immediate effect and go back to my family," he declared in a statement.

Further updates expected.
