Hazbin Hotel's Creator Unveils Rosie and Alastor's Origin Tale Is a Major Season 3 Tease
Devoted viewers of the series at last received a much-anticipated backstory in season 2's episode 4, called “It's a Deal.” This installment is likely to prompt extensive conversation and raise many inquiries about the nature of one particular demon Overlord who seems significantly stronger than anyone previously realized. The new revelations feature a look into the human life of a beloved character prior to his demise and condemnation to Hell.
A Major Tease for Upcoming Installments
The series creator disclosed an inside detail about the episode – it acts as a major tease for the third season. She also provided more insight into the methodology of designing the mortal forms of her infernal animated characters.
Warning: Spoilers for the fourth episode of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In “It’s a Deal”, a look back reveals that fan-favorite personality Alastor the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his mortal days. Being aware he was destined for Hell, he made contact with the realm beyond beforehand to obtain a powerful role there. The charismatic leader, the charismatic leader Hell’s cannibal community, vowed Alastor he would become “the strongest Sinner in Hell” in return for his eternal spirit.
This raises the question: How is this character sufficiently strong to raise Alastor above all other Sinner Demons?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the initial building block in a much bigger story that involves a great deal, leading into season 3,” the creator explains. “Obviously that is an excellent question: How is she so strong? The solution could be many things, but the revelation is in season three. I am thrilled for people to see it.”
It is uncertain how long the audience will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The production companies have approved the third and fourth seasons, but the showrunner often remarks that animated production is a time-consuming endeavor, and subsequent seasons have no release dates yet. Still, she says withholding on those details is an important part of keeping the second season's focus where it belongs.
“The challenge of any kind of deal with infernal beings, or stories that have enigmas, is giving people sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that gradually, and allowing that be gratifying,” she says. “So I'm very excited.”
Mysteries Resolved in The Next Season
The creator promises that season 3 will address the queries followers have been posing, such as why the cannibal leader ordered Alastor to vanish for seven years, which diminished his power in the infernal realm.
“The entire seven-year span, and the pacts these humans are doing, and all that — it's feeding into a bigger narrative,” she says.
Meanwhile, the origin story episode offers a further look into how the core cast of Sinner Demons looked like as humans, following after viewing Sir Pentious’ historical human form in episode 2. She explains that a lot of thought was put into these character designs.
“The mortal forms of the characters hold so much weight,” she says. “They range from appearing quite distinct from their demon form to looking very similar. With the first character, the initial design we see, there was some internal discussion within the team between choosing a design that symbolizes the personality, versus going with something that's historically correct. We leaned toward creating something that just felt like it was him.”
She mentions the primary controversy over the mortal look of Pentious was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘Nobody typically had long hair like that in Victorian-era London.’ But at the same time, we think the outline is so important, and we also just felt he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We sort of provided the rationale that he lived in seclusion, so he just let his hair grow out. So there's always a way. As we create the human versions of these personas […] it's such a fun thing to explore and figure out. I'm excited for fans to see more of what the human forms look like.”
